My Ride: 325iT 5 speed/Sport
In search of an e91 with a 6-speed...

My 2005 e46 325iT (Alpine white, tan leather, 5 speed, sports package, only 65,000 miles) got totaled by my insurance company, and I'm on the hunt for something to replace it.

e46 wagons with manuals are like hen's teeth in the US, and the few that are out there have high mileage.

I'm considering an e91, but the manual is a dealbreaker as is the sports package (love those seats.)

How hard is it going to be to find one? And, in general, what should I be looking out for in an e91 touring? Were there any changes in the model run that makes newer or older models more desirable?

Can I find something well cared for, with low miles for under $20K?

TIA

My Ride: 08 335xi
I just bought my first bimmer a year ago and, at that time, was looking for for an 08 E90 or 92 (335xi) with the sports package and MT. Being in New England (not much of a car place), finding THOSE was extremely tough. So I can only imagine how much tougher finding a `sporty' wagon would be. Think about it - if there is a (relatively) small market for MT coupes and sedans, how big could the market for wagons with MT's be?

Funny though, when I was searching I did find what seemed to be a disproportionately higher number of sporty (ie w/MT) cars in NJ. I ended up getting mine at a dealer near Buffalo, NY.

Good luck in your search.

I searched for a lightly used manual-transmission E91 for a while. Only found one car, a red 2008 manual trans car. Given I already had two red cars, I decided to pass. The car was offered at Bellevue Honda -- it's been a few months, but I suppose it's worth checking to see if it's still there. It was in good shape, priced in the mid-20s, with about 28K miles, and only appeared to be in need of a good detail/paint correction.

Instead of continuing to look for pre-owned, I decided to order one of the last E91s off the assembly line. I picked up my new 2012 in Munich via EU delivery at the end of May. Manual transmission, AWD, M-Sport package. Lots of details and pics of the car and experience here:

http://www.bmwpugetsound.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=46885

I just picked it up here stateside from the delivery dealer last week:

The 60-day transit time after EU dropoff in Geneva was painful! But I love it so far. I figure that, with the manual trans and M-sport package, I'll have no trouble getting rid of it when the time comes years from now.

I considered waiting for the new F31, but I didn't have high confidence that BMW would continue to offer the manual transmission in the new 3 Touring. In fact, when I ordered mine, it wasn't even clear we were going to get the touring at all. Besides, the straight six N52 is a nice motor, if not the most fuel efficient.

Good luck in the search.

-Rick

I got mine in Philly, a 2011 low miles (1280) owned by BMW with RWD and manual seats. There is a nice one for sale in Rochester NY with 17K miles. It is on Autotrader, if you are still interested. I have only seen one or two E91 RWD wagons with manual and sports package in more than a year of looking.

While I was searching for mine over the past year or more, I saw only one or two for sale in the entire country at any given time. That is still true. Here are the ones I know about***********:

Nice car, but in Rochester NY and not from a BMW dealer. This car has been in their inventory since last August, 2012. They are probably receptive to offers. Wish it had sports package and black interior, then it would be perfect:

This is a 2007 with more miles, but price is a lot lower. Still no sport package, and ad says steptronic but car pictured has six speed stick. Worth a call if you want to go to WA.:

I am still looking for one because my son might be interested in one. He has two cars that he likes, but he trades cars often.

Rear wheel drive e91s with manual and sports seats are extremely rare, I have looked for over a year. I also wanted xenons, heated seats and premium pack.

I took delivery today of a manual e91 but with no sports seats. I plan to modify the car over the next few months, including adding a 3 stage intake from a 330i

The holy grail is sunroof delete, sports package, cold weather package, manual shift, manual seats, xenons and maybe HK stereo. I have seen that only once or twice and usually in a 2007 versus the more desirable later model E91s. There is a 2007 for sale in Florida with sports and premium packages, asking $10,900 for 64K miles, and I suspect it has a salvage title. I had to settle for sunroof, no sports package and no xenons, but at least I can put springs in later to make it lower.

I dont believe there was a sunroof delete option in the US. I thought they all came with the panaramic roof.

There was a sunroof delete on the E46s. I don't recall ever seeing an E91 without it, but that doesn't stop me from putting it on my wish list!

There is a Blue Water Met with Oyster interior rwd 6 speed stick e91 with M-Tec sport, no nav and no Xenons at Stevens Creek BMW in San Jose CA. It's got like 1600 miles on it.

Here is the one I bought this week. No Sport and it's an X drive but it sure is sweet!

Thumbs up for the E30 behind you - reminds me of my first Beemer and I still miss it!

Consider it -if there is a (moderately) modest market for MT roadsters and cars, how huge could the business for wagons with MT's be?

They are out there. And a surprising number of them have the sport package. But in my experience, if they have the sport pkg they usually don't have anything else. Probably ordered by an entheusest that could barely swing it. I found that there is at least 3 to 5 cpo cars for sale nation wide at any time.

Good luck.

At BMW of the Main Line in Philly, there is a triplet to the car my son and I have. The VIN is 6 digits before mine and is identical to the cars my son and I bought at the same dealership. All are 2011 MT wagons w/o sport package, all owned by BMW, and all had only have about 1500 miles of use in 2 years of ownership by BMW.
