Back to the dark side

Use to be in E-46er (nearly full Dinan) now back after a while with the MiniCoopers to full BMW. Just got a 2011 328iX Touring (SportVagen). Looking for things like Euro Anti Blind Spot mirrors, full cargo area rubber mats (with the seats down), wondering if the Whisper racks from Australia really are that good and more.

Glad to be back, this Estate is the bomb!

My Ride: 2008 335i
My name is Roy, I bought my first BMW in 1973, a 2002tii, then a 325is,
a 318is, a328ci and now a 335i.
Does anyone have any experience with the BMW performance enhancement upgrade for the 335? I was just wondering if it affects the driveability and
where in the rpm range the extra power is gained.

My Ride: 2008 328I CV
Hi

Hi, my name is Joe. I just signed the papers for a certified 2008, 328I Convertible. It has 40K miles with BMW warranty until Sept. 30, 2012, and CPO warranty until 9/30/2014. I just traded in a 2002, 325I sedan for it, and I also own a 2006 525XI.

The car just had a cracked head cylinder cover replaced. Is this something I should be worried about? What else could be wrong because of it?

Looking forward to being an active participant of the forum.

Hi, Joe. I'm new here (see a few posts up) and also in MA - I'm assuming you're in Framingham, MA? I'm wondering which dealer you bought from?

The 335xi I got 2 months ago is very similar to yours in mileage, age, CPO, etc. But I had trouble locating a sporty one here in NE, so I ended up getting mine in NYS. Herb Chambers had one with the features I was seeking, but it sold in less than a day, before I could even get to look at it.

Also, if you're in MA and a motor head, I joined the Boston Chapter of the BMW CCA (which you might already be a member of) and have started doing the F1 Boston karting series the club has apparently been doing for several years. It's a blast if you haven't raced there yet and might be interested.

Hi, Jack. Yes, I'm from Framingham. I bought from Herb Chambers in Boston, but I get my car serviced at Herb Chambers in Sudbury. I've been following this car on their website for a while and when I saw the price going from >$31K to <$29K I just went for it. It is a great looking car, but not quite as powerful as yours. I've always been a fan of the less powerful Bimmers because, A) They're powerful enough without getting me into too much trouble, and B) They're cheaper to maintain/repair once they're out of warranty and since I tend to keep them an average of seven to eight years, the last part is very important to me.

I've been a CCA member since I bought my first BMW in 1997. I joined mostly because of Roundel and the dealer discounts for parts and accessories. I also appreciate their "BMW CCA Membership Reward" and this will be the third check I will receive from them, even though the benefit has been downgraded to $250 for a CPO, from $500 in the past.

I am a staunch supporter of Herb Chambers. I especially like their smart-price policy. No negotiation on the buying side, but there's plenty of leeway with negotiating add-ons and the trade-in. In this case, I'm getting a free LoJack and a few other minor things. No hassles, no games.

I noticed that you're from Duxbury. I would highly recommend you use BMW of Sudbury (Herb Chambers) for your repairs/maintenance needs. They're an AAAAAA++++ shop and they will work with you until you're satisfied. My SA is Colleen and she's a truly great adviser who takes her job seriously and always strives to accommodate her customers. She leaves no stone unturned until the problem is taken care of to my complete satisfaction, especially those problems that appear only once-in-a-while and are the toughest to diagnose.

Good luck with your gorgeous 335XI and happy motoring.

Thanks for the input, Joe. This is my first BMW, so it's good to hear from people like you who have had them before over a number of years, and liked them enough to stay with the brand. Your new one too looks really nice. I noticed it is also black - this is my first ever black car so I'm a tad apprehensive about keeping it looking good. Fortunately I'm retired so I don't anticipate putting tons of miles on the car. I also get to garage it the vast majority of the time, and that helps as well. I had owned the car (95 Maxima) I drove out to Buffalo to trade in on the bimmer for 17 years. It had just over 220K miles, ran great, and still looked pretty decent.

As for Herb Chambers, I did go to their Boston facility while I was shopping and was not impressed at all. Maybe I'm just jaded from living in the burbs for so long, but I found navigating around their place in the middle of the city to be a nightmare. I couldn't even fathom getting service done there. I also found them to be very unfriendly (almost cold), especially since they knew I was car shopping. Their internet person, whom I had been in touch with regularly for a number of months, was in her office but wouldn't even come down to meet me and just say hello.

It's good to hear you've had good experiences with Chamber's Sudbury dealership, but that would be WAY too far for me. Unless, of course, BMW Gallery in Norwell (the closest dealer and one I'm hoping to use) proves to be a problem. I don't expect that, however, since I know other people who have used them and have been pleased with their service.

Again, nice chatting and good luck with your new car too.

Hi Jack,

Frankly, I'm quite surprised about your treatment/impressions of Herb Chamber Boston. I have to say that it was quite the opposite for me. My sales advisor, Nick Lagas, was nothing short of spectacular. He was very supportive, friendly, and he seemed genuinely interested in seeing that I was happy with my choice. The general manager, Melissa Steffy, came over to meet me personally since we had spoken on the phone, and she was super friendly and thanked me profusely for going over and doing business with them. Finally, their business manager, Sammi Tong Iqbal, was very friendly and outgoing and when she found out that I had visited her native city, Hong Kong, we developed sort of a bond. Although she offered me many packages such as tire warranty, maintenance warranty, Simoniz, etc. she was not at all pushy and respected my wishes to decline all that she was offering. I don't know, maybe you got there on the wrong day, but I have nothing but praise for them. I can't say the same for BMW gallery in Norwood. It was like the sales guy and manager were not interested in selling me a car and would not budge a penny from what they were asking for. Finally, they said they would take off about $300 wanting me to spend $2K more than what Kelly Blue Book recommends to pay for the particular car. I believe they also own the Norwell dealership, so "Caveat emptor" is the word. This link would help you clear things up: http://www.dealerrater.com

As for the BMW brand, with proper care their engines are pretty much bullet proof, but they are sophisticated cars and have way too many sensors that will eventually fail. Those are the things that will fail the most.

Just be sure that during the warranty service you're super attentive and have them take care of every little things. I usually spend the first two years eliminating whatever little gremlin the car has and I don't mind at all that the car goes in the shop a lot since I get a loaner. Better nitpick and have things taken care of than grin and bear it and pay big bucks later, when the warranty runs out.

This will be my second black BMW, and I have to tell you that black leaves me with an ear to ear grin after I'm done claying it, polishing it, and waxing it. It becomes practically a mirror and it looks super awesome. Sure, it gets dirty in the winter, but which car doesn't? I just take it to the car wash once a week an enjoy it for a few days until I wash it again. Do I think your car will make it to 225K miles? Probably, but you'll probably need a transmission replacement around the 150K miles mark because of BMW's policy of not changing the transmission fluid because of the "lifetime" ATF. Also, if I may give another piece of advice, don't buy into changing the oil at 15K miles, or in your case once a year because you don't drive much. My wife only puts in 6K miles a year on her BMW and I change the oil and filter every six months, whether it needs it or not. I change mine every 7.5K miles because I drive more.

Please do not hesitate to email me or IM me if I can be of further help. One good way to learn about BMW is to read Mike Miller's advice on Techtalk in Roundel.

Good luck with you car and enjoy the ultimate drive.
