JB4 problems

Hello,

I have a 2008 335I with a JB4. I have had her checked out from head to toe and no problem. The HPFS is with in spec, the injectors are with in spec everything is within spec. Here is my problem.

When I run the car with the JB4 on map 1 I get a slight hesitation randomly. Once every day or so. Especially when I get down on it. It does not throw it in limp mode but it acts as if it's starved for gas. However I can get down on it all day with the jb4 disengaged and it will never show a problem.

I usually run it on map 5 and it does the same thing. I've taken it in to several places and everything checks within spec.

Any ideas?

It is possible that you might need to change your spark plugs. A hesitation/hiccup is a pretty common side effect with a misfire. Although this isn't a video made by BMS for the JB4, it should help clear things up about what a misfire is and why/show to change your spark plugs.

Thanks I'll check in to this. I did have the coils replaced..I did not change the plugs. I'll try that next. My only problem is it never does it with the jb4 off at sick settings.she runs perfect..with the jb4 on she will hesitate.

A tune will make symptoms more apparent as your car runs harder!

Get rid of the JB4 and get a Cobb pro-tune. My 335is was doing the same thing with the jb4 installed. I posted logs, asked terry for help, put in new plugs. Still ran like crap. IMO the jb4 is chinese made junk. Spend the extra money and get an ecu tune.

Both are great tunes and it ultimately comes down to the end user and what they're looking for.

JB4 over the Cobb:
1) Built in autotuning. The tune adjusts itself to your vehicle, mods,
and octane, to optimize power and safety.
2) Optional in dash boost gauge, shift light, and other features
assessable via the steering wheel controls. Boost gauge function isn’t too accurate.
3) On the fly map switching including pump gas, race gas, auto
learning, and non-turbo economy maps.
4) User adjustable boost limiting in 1st & 2nd gears. This is similar to COBB’s linear & stock throttle mapping
5) Various extended safety features like oil temperature protection,
lean run, knock, and over boost fail safe systems. Great safety features built in. But my personal opinion is they need many fail safes since the tune is that much more aggressive (than the COBB) and relies on the ECU to make adjustments (pull timing, etc.).
6) Built in support for E85, integrated methanol injection, and larger
turbos should the customer ever want to add those.
7) Available no lift shifting and 2STEP rev limiter for manual
transmission cars.
8) Lower price point

Cobb over the JB4:
1) Easier installation and removal procedure, does not require users
to open DME box or add any additional equipment. Or keep it installed on the vehicle – it doesn’t need to stay plugged in.
2) Includes maps provided for various modifications and pump fuels,
race fuels, and E85 mixtures.
3) Custom tuning/mapping is available via professional Cobb tuners.
4) Able to datalog using Cobb handheld device without the need of a
laptop computer.
5) Access to some additional DME tables that can't be changed via JB4
alone including VANOS, fuel scalars, etc.
