Has anyone gone from an E46 M3 to an E92?
I'm looking for people that have traded in their E46 M3s for an E92, whether it be the 328i, 328xi or the 335i. I want a newer car again and have the urge to not wait for the new M3 to become open for general sales (I'm not on a list right now at the dealership, so I won't be able to get it anytime soon ).
What are your thoughts on doing this? I've driven both the 328i and 335i, and I'm not sure which one I'd want. I love the raw power of my M3-especially on track days-but I drive so much that I kinda want something with a little softer ride and I love the lines of the E92's.

From the people that I have spoken to that moved from an E46 ///M3 to an E9X, they have all chosen an E92 335. Their main reasons were just like you, they wanted a little bit softer of a ride and the E92 did that while maintaining an incredible amount of power.
I doubt you would end up being happy with an 328 after having owned the E46 ///M3

I went from an e46 M3 to an e90 and I can definitely tell you that I miss the power. I am just waiting for the new m3 to come out-and will be trading again.

From your profile it says that you have a 328i, have you driven a 335i to compare that car and the feeling from your previous M3?

 ??
I've driven the 335i coupe and it was a good ride and a really nice car. The power was there, but it was just too "civil" for my liking when I had it in my head that 300lb-ft of torque and 300hp were present. I think I built the car up too much in my head. Don't get me wrong-I absolutely loved the car and would own one in a second if I decided to get rid of the M3. I drove the Automatic w/ the sport package 335i, so maybe that was why it was more "tame" than I was expecting...

I just traded out of my 2006 M3 (competetion package) for a E92 335i...and I am really happy. Like you, I needed something a little softer for the daily commute, but that I could still do some slight mods to bring it to the track a couple of times a year.
IMHO it's about 95% as fast as the E46 M3, with a lot more low end tourque, and about 100% better as a daily driver.

I just traded in my '03 e46 M3 1.5 weeks ago for a new '07 e92 335i. I love that car. I do miss the raw feel of the M3, the tranny whine in 3rd racing up to 100mph, the loud exhaust that scared bicyclist when I gunned it while passing them on narrow roads and the overall... "crap" in your pants experience! But what I love about the 335i? The beauty and absolute refinement of the 3-series brand to carry it another 6-years. The modern design that catches your eye and a stance when parked that looks like it's doing eighty. The beautiful interior that makes you feel not only sporty but modern. The incredible stereo system (Logic7) that out performs the older HK system by 10 fold - and doesn't "rattle" inside the bottom of poorly designed doors. Smooth and lightening quick 0-60 acceleration that is absolutely deceiving and a complete allusion. Paddle shifter step that shifts at 100 milliseconds with accurate rev matching. A wonderful straight six sounding exhaust that almost sounds like an Italian sports car or even better... an older 635csi. And best of all, it's still a BMW.

At the moment, both my M3 Cab and E93 sit in my garage. Today I drove them back to back. The M3 is an SMG and the E93 is an automatic.
Speed/quickness, they are remarkably close. The E93 is 1,000 times easier to launch and digs better, primarily do to torque. Torque is your friend.
The E93 is also newer. The M3 is feeling like a late 90's design. Everything just fits/works better in the E93. The 'toys' are a big improvement too.
Don't get me wrong, I love my M3, but it is the one that is going up for sale.
