BMW GROUP (WORLDWIDE) SALES - 7% SALES INCREASE IN MAY
BMW brand grows by 5.8%, MINI by 14.1% - MINI passes the million mark
Munich. BMW Group sales rose by 7.0% in May compared with the same month last year reaching 128,408 automobiles (prev.yr.: 119,996).
For the year to the end of May, the number of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles delivered to customers rose by 2.1% to 580,043 (prev.yr.: 567,940).
The sale of BMW brand cars rose in the month under review by 5.8% to 108,488 units (prev.yr.: 102,535). The new generations of the BMW X5, BMW
3 Series Coupé and Cabrio are now available in all major markets. Demand for these models is above expectations. In May 2007 alone, over 11,000 BMW X5 (11,096) were delivered to customers. This is an increase of 77.3% compared with the same month last year (6,257). At 7,592 deliveries, the 3 Series Coupé, in a month-on-month comparison (prev.yr.: 1,979) is actually 283.6% above the previous year. The number of 3 Series Cabrios sold in May 2007 is 7,120 which is 161.1% above the corresponding month last year (2,727). Although the 3-door BMW 1 Series has only been available since 26 May this year, 707 units have already been delivered to customers.
In the year to the end of May, 494,712 BMW brand vehicles were delivered
(prev.yr.: 485,480), which is an increase of 1.9%.
After the worldwide launch of the new model generation, the MINI is continuing its sustainable growth. In May 2007, the millionth MINI since the market launch was delivered. Under the BMW Group umbrella, this premium small car has been available since summer 2001. On an accumulated basis, 1,003,536 MINI had been delivered to customers up to the end of May. In a monthly comparison, the sales growth for the MINI is 14.1%, or a total of 19,864 vehicles sold (prev.yr.: 17,405). For the year to the end of May 2007, 85,110 MINI were sold, which is 3.5% more than in the previous year (82,246).
The product mix remains high: in the first five months of the year, the MINI Cooper represented 58% of deliveries, or 49,155 units, followed in second place by the top model, the MINI Cooper S, with 26,704 units (31%).
The MINI One, the latest version which has been available since the end of April, sold 9,251 units (11%).
In May, Rolls-Royce delivered 56 Phantoms to customers (prev.yr.: 56). Sales for the year to the end of May reached 221 automobiles (prev.yr.: 214/+3.3%).
Dr. Michael Ganal, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing, stated: "Despite a number of major model changes, we are already, in the first five months of this year, above last year's levels and ahead of all relevant competitors. We will continue to accelerate sales growth over the next few months and thus consolidate our leadership position."
Motorcycle segment increases by 9.1% up to and including May
In the motorcycle segment, deliveries to customers in the past month reached 12,289 units (prev.yr.: 12,431/-1.1%). In the year to the end of May, 47,632 BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers, which is an increase of 9.1% compared with the same period last year (43,645).
