335i -- Surprisingly good in the snow!

Posted 02-28-2008 at 01:25 PM by pix335i
Coming from owning an Audi all wheel drive, I was more than a bit curious as to how the 335i was going to handle the inclement weather. Last year it seemed like I never really had to test it but this year we have had some more snow here and luckily I have been caught out in it

My conclusion to this point is that the 335i actually rocks in the snow for the most part. Sure, there have been some interesting points in my traveling during inclement weather but generally speaking the car just goes without any problems. I even had to drive up a mountain road in the middle of the night with about 3" or so of fresh snow on completely untreated roads.

While there are probably plenty of you out there who may be a bit more hesitant to take the car out for a spin when there is a chance for bad weather...I can say that the car is more than capable given some common sense in driving and a decent set of snow tires. As you can imagine, the RWD can actually be a lot of fun in that kind of weather when no one else is around on the roads

You must have kept the stock wheels/tires because sometimes I can't even get out of my driveway.

These BMW's are designed and weighted very well. My 325i E90 does great in the snow with the stock RFT Bridgestones. One thing I found which helped in the snow/ice was siping the tires (done @ Discount Tire). Not a huge difference, but noticeable improvement in traction. We have a few e46's and I will say the E90 seems to get better traction in the snow. As you said, very fun to get sideways...

There is no doubt it is good in Winter conditions, as long as you use proper tires the !
The "systems" will help you unless the chassis takes care of it
It's an old cliche that rear wheel drive is no good in snow..
-Press the DSC button for a few seconds and enjoy sliding..
